Resignation of Chair of the Board of Trustees

Stan Barker has resigned as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Friends of the RUH. This was a planned resignation as he had previously stated that he would take up the position until the Charity had achieved CIO status (Charitable Incorporated Organisation) this happened at the end of September this year.
He took over the chair at a difficult time when, due to other resignations the board was down to four trustees five were needed to make the board quorate. No decisions could be taken. Gradually the membership built up and the Trustees could now work towards becoming CIO.
During his tenure Stan drew the Friends Charity closer to the Forever Friends by working on two joint ventures The Dementia Care Project, later called the Friendly Faces Project to to which we donated £24Kand the Critical Care Project to which we donated £150K
Although he has resigned as a Trustee he will continue as a Volunteer Guide every Friday morning where he has been for the last eleven years. Thank you Stan for everything you have done for the charity.

MEDIA RELEASE OCTOBER 2019

Friends of the RUH have now become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO)

From the 1st of October we are delighted to announce that the Friends of the RUH have now become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). Our Official name is Friends of the Royal United Hospitals and we will still be known as the Friends of the RUH, charity number 1176686. You can find out more about what a CIO is on the charity commission website www.gov.uk/government/organisations/charity-commission. Whilst this change has been the result of lots of work behind the scenes, what won’t change is our continued support for the patients with comforts and amenities and the provision of over 280 valued volunteers throughout the trust.

Help lead our Friends of the RUH charity

A new Chair and three other enthusiastic and dedicated people are being sought to join the Board of Trustees of the Friends of the RUH charity.

The new appointees will join the eight trustees already in post. The appointments coincide with the Friends of the RUH transferring to a new charitable incorporated organisation or CIO – Charity No 1176686 on 1 October 2019.

The charity was established more than 60 years ago with the aim of providing amenities and support services for patients that would not otherwise be provided by the NHS or the other statutory bodies.

The trustees oversee the charity’s two retail operations, the Friends’ convenience shop in the atrium and the coffee shop, as well as the management of the volunteer workforce of some 350 people who provide much appreciated support to the hospital in more than 20 areas. Volunteers’ activities include serving drinks on the wards, guiding patients and visitors around the hospital, repairing walking aids and maintaining the courtyard gardens around the hospital estate.

Bernard Rymer, Assistant Treasurer & Trustee, said: “For our new Chair we are looking for someone with strategic management experience, leadership skills and vision, someone who can help take forward the important work we do in partnership with the management of the Royal United Hospitals.

To strengthen the governance of the Charity we want to appoint three other trustees who can bring knowledge and expertise to the Board and to set and monitor the Charity’s strategic direction. We especially want to hear from people with expertise in charity governance, information technology, marketing and communications and retail management.”

For more information about the role of Chair or Trustee with the Friends of the RUH, please contact Bernard Rymer, Assistant Treasurer & Trustee, on 01225 427377 or by email – Bernard.rymer@nhs.net
