A legacy gift is a donation made by someone through their will or other form of estate planning.

Since 1957 the Friends of the RUH have supported the Royal United Hospitals to deliver care and support to patients and visitors. Gifts in wills are one of the biggest personal differences you can make and is wonderful way to support the Friends of the RUH. Legacy Gifts are vital to our work, so any gift you give, whatever size, will make a big difference to the support we provide. Thank you for your support.

The Charity awards grants to support projects at the RUH and works closely with the RUH senior management to target areas that will provide the most benefit to patients and the hospital.  In addition, the Charity funds two staff roles to provide the administration and recruitment of RUH volunteers.

Surplus profits from the FRUH retail areas and monies from fundraising are spent supporting patients at the RUH, which in the financial year 2025/2026 totalled a fantastic £426,000.

Some of our recent grants

£100,000 towards the RUH campaign for a new PET CT Scan
£48,000 to fund the Musician in Residence until Sept 2028, who provided music therapy to patients across the RUH
£32,000 to provide furniture for the new and much larger Discharge Lounge to enable patients a quicker transition from hospital to home
£17,000 to relaunch the Stitch in Time therapy service to support patients to help improve patient experience and keep active through stitch and sewing crafts
£11,000 to purchase a SpaceSafe Hi Lo Specialist Needs Bed for children
£55 for Tooth Fairy Bags for children who have needed surgery for tooth removals.
£5k for a mobile phone charging and safe keeping unit for patients arriving in A&E
£50,000 for a Gut Directed Hypnotherapy Programme
£9,000 for Baby Lifeline Bags, which will deliver direct improvements in safety and quality of care for women and babies choosing community and homebirth services provided by the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust (RUH)
£7,300 Heidi Health, an AI‑powered clinical documentation (medical scribe) tool designed specifically for healthcare settings. Heidi captures physiotherapy consultations in real time (with patient consent).
£7k towards digital wall/calendar clocks for dementia patients located throughout the RUH
