Home Volunteer Steps to Become a Volunteer

Volunteering at the RUH is a rewarding experience and we’re excited to have you join us!

Due to the nature of volunteering in a hospital, applicants are required to go through our application process. It usually takes around 4 – 6 weeks from filling in an application form to volunteering. That does depend on getting forms back to us as soon as possible, and making sure all on-line training is completed.

Our Volunteer Services Team are on hand to support you during the process so please e-mail us if you have any questions or concerns.

An overview of the Application Process

If you want a chat about volunteering before applying then click the ‘Volunteer Now’ button and complete the form. We’ll then give you a ring to discuss our volunteering opportunities so you can decide if hospital volunteering is right for you.

If you already know you want to volunteer you can go straight to submitting an application form. To do this create a username on our Better Impact system and fill in an application form.

We will contact you to arrange an interview to give you more information on what it’s like to be a volunteer, the available roles and to explain the full application process.

After the interview we will send you some further forms to fill in including a Occupational Health check form, a DBS application form and a Covid-19 Risk assessment.

Once we have received all your application forms, we will arrange a trip to the office. During this visit we will need to check some documentation for your DBS and will be able to give you more information on volunteering.

After your office visit you can start the on-line training courses.   These are mandatory for all volunteers, at the end you will be issued with an NHS Volunteers Training Certificate which is accepted across the NHS and many other organisations.

Whilst you are training, we will ensure that all your checks are being carried out.

At this point of the process you are almost ready to start volunteering.  You will need to drop into the office to receive your ID Badge and Volunteers polo shirt.  We will time this office visit with your first volunteering induction session so that when you leave the office you will be heading to your first volunteer shift.
